Haaland goal lifts Manchester City to Premier League summit
Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League after making it three wins from three games with a narrow victory over newly promoted Coventry City, although the result was far more uncomfortable than the scoreline suggested.
Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the match at the Etihad Stadium, heading home midway through the first half to maintain his remarkable start to the campaign. The Norwegian has now scored in each of City's opening three league matches.
However, Enzo Maresca's side were forced to withstand considerable pressure from Coventry, who came close to earning their first Premier League point in 25 years.
City's summer recruitment was on full display, with Maresca introducing new arrivals Enzo Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye as part of a squad overhaul that has cost the club a reported £460 million ($622m) during the transfer window.
Fernandez, who joined from Chelsea for £125 million to equal the Premier League transfer record, had initially been expected to begin on the bench. An injury to Nico O'Reilly during the warm-up changed those plans, with the Argentine brought into the starting XI.
Ndiaye made his City debut as part of an attacking line-up that also included Haaland, Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki.
Coventry, meanwhile, were still searching for their first goal since returning to the top flight. They had lost each of their first three matches without scoring, but Frank Lampard's team immediately showed they were capable of troubling the champions.
City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma almost handed the visitors a dream start when he miscontrolled a backpass. The Italian goalkeeper recovered just in time, clearing the ball from his own goal line.
Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni then wasted further opportunities as Coventry threatened to take the lead before City gradually established control.
Cherki struck the post as City pushed forward, while Fernandez played an important role in breaking the deadlock.
The midfielder released Semenyo down the right flank, with the forward delivering an inviting cross towards the far post. Haaland rose above the Coventry defence and directed his header into the net to put City ahead.
Haaland nearly doubled the advantage before the interval, but Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth kept out his effort.
City were unable to put the contest beyond doubt after the break, leaving the visitors believing they could still rescue a historic result.
Donnarumma ultimately proved decisive, producing two outstanding late saves to keep out efforts from Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms.
The saves preserved City's perfect league record but also highlighted the vulnerability in a performance that left Maresca with plenty to consider.
For Lampard, despite another defeat, Coventry's display offered significant encouragement as they adjust to life back in the Premier League after a quarter of a century away.
City now face a much tougher test next weekend when they travel across Manchester to face local rivals Manchester United.
The victory puts City at the top of the table, at least temporarily, with defending champions Arsenal due to face Chelsea on Sunday.
